Founded in 2006, Wine Punts is one of the few companies that produce these unique drinking glasses. We convert everyday wine bottles into a Wine Punt (drinking glass). Wine Punts is also dedicated to improving the environment by recycling thousands of wine bottles that get thrown away each month. Wine Punts simply cuts a wine bottle in half, using the bottom half as the drinking glass and recycles the top half. Every Wine Punt is hand made and inspected to obtain a high standard of quality control.Wine Punts is located in Colorado Springs. All the bottles converted into Wine Punts come from local restaurants wanting to make a difference in the world by recycling.
Offering two different sizes, and an array of different colors, Wine Punts can satisfy any customer’s taste or style. Anyone who loves wine will enjoy a set of Wine Punts drinking glasses in their home.
The “punt” of a bottle is the indentation at the base of the bottle. In the old days, when wine bottles were each made by hand, it’s very likely that the punt was a result of the glass making process – but of course experienced glass makers would have been able to “fix” this before the bottle was done, and flattened the punt. Why didn’t they? There are a variety of theories about why finished bottles had punts. It’s important to note that nobody knows for sure :). The explanations below are argued about endlessly at wine events.
For Champagne and sparkling wine, the indentation helps to give structural integrity to the bottle, which has to be pretty strong to hold the pressure of the bubbly wine. Also, it helps the bottles stack if you are putting them one on top of the other during the second fermentation stage.
Recycled wine bottle glasses, also known as a wine punt, are simply a wine bottle converted into a drinking glass. The punt in the bottom is what gives the name for these recycled wine bottle glasses. Wine Punts mission is to create a quality product that makes a difference in the world, and we are doing it one bottle at a time.
Wine Punts is dedicated to helping the environment by sending fewer wine bottles to landfills and recycling them into drinking glasses. Not only is Wine Punts helping the environment but you as customers are recycling hundreds of bottles each month. Without the valued customers that “drink from the better half,” there would be no recycling at all.
Below are some facts about recycling glass:
Every month, we throw out enough glass bottles and jars to fill up a giant skyscraper. All of these jars are recyclable!
The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle can run a 100–watt light bulb for four hours. It also causes 20% less air pollution and 50% less water pollution than when a new bottle is made from raw materials.
A modern glass bottle would take 4000 years or more to decompose — and even longer if it’s in the landfill.
Mining and transporting raw materials for glass produces about 385 pounds of waste for every ton of glass that is made. If recycled glass is substituted for half of the raw materials, the waste is cut by more than 80%.
Most bottles and jars contain at least 25% recycled glass.
Glass never wears out — it can be recycled forever. We save over a ton of resources for every ton of glass recycled — 1,330 pounds of sand, 433 pounds of soda ash, 433 pounds of limestone, and 151 pounds of feldspar.
States with bottle deposit laws have 35–40% less litter by volume.
If all the glass bottles and jars collected through recycling in the U.S. in 94 were laid end to end, they’d reach the moon and half way back to earth.
Each UK family uses an average of 500 glass bottles and jars annually.
The largest glass furnace produces over 1 million glass bottles and jars per day.
Nationwide, 38% of all glass bottles were recycled in 2000.
Wine Punts can satisfy any customers taste or style.

What sets Wine Punts apart from the rest are the processes we have in place in our production:
– Fire polished rim – when fire polished, each glass will have a smooth finish that is consistent with the rest of the glass. This process also prevents cracking and chipping from normal use.
– Annealed – when glass is annealed, it is slowly cooled to relieve any internal stresses. This process will increase the durability to withstand even the harshest industrial use
– Where do all the wine bottles come from? Most wine bottles come from restaurants. These restaurants are looking for a way to help the environment.
– Are there any hazardous by-products from making wine punts? Absolutely not
– Can the glasses be placed in a refrigerator / freezer? Yes
– Are the glasses dishwasher safe? Yes
– How durable are the glasses? Wine Punts drinking glasses are extremely durable. Restaurant owners have stated they hold up better than any manufactured glasses.
– Is the entire bottle recycled? Yes
