 CAPTAIN BLANKENSHIP

Inspired by the smells of the natural world, Captain Blankenship set sail on her maiden voyage in 2009. The craft was built in San Francisco by me, Jana Blankenship, and now sails in the lush Hudson River Valley.  Since childhood I have had my nose wafting in the trees and flowers. As a young devotee, I mixed together my mother’s perfumes to create signature perfumes like “Scents of Hawaii.” This heavy mixing as a child led to an ongoing allergy to synthetic scents. My love of smells and desire for luxurious, natural products propels my exploration. All Captain Blankenship products are made with love by me using only organic, wildcrafted or natural ingredients.

To me, scent is a marker of place, time, and memory, struck by colored notes that resonate. I hope these products bring you as much pleasure as they bring me. Put them on your skin and let them grow.

– What inspired you to create the Blankenship line?

I had a strange allergic reaction five years ago, which caused me to investigate the products I was using. Even though they were natural and organic, the ingredient lists were often daunting and hard to decipher. I started Captain Blankenship from a desire to make simple and honest organic products that were also luxurious and unique. Most of my products, except the perfumes, have under five ingredients. I have also been obsessed with smells since childhood, I used to mix my mom’s perfumes together into my own creations. I want Captain Blankenship to make people feel good about what they are putting on their body, but also feel transported by the scents.

– What is the significance of the name “Captain Blankenship”

My husband’s last name is Blankenship and I loved it from the moment I first heard it. My friends joked before we got married that I was going to be the Captain of the Blankenship. When I decided to start the company, the choice of name was an instantaneous decision. I love the old world feel of the name, which I felt was akin to my handmade, small batch products.

– What is your personal favorite product you created?

The one product I couldn’t live without is my Sea Salt Hair Spray. It brings my hair to life. I also couldn’t function properly without the Dry Shampoo and Rosy Red lip balm.

– Are you currently developing more products?

Yes, i am working on a vibrational cleansing room spray, body oil and a cream deodorant.

– What are your favorite skincare lines?

I love Marie Veronique Organics tinted sunscreen. It is mattifying and pretty perfect. I also love Tatcha’s skin blotting papers.

Wolf Moon

The full moon in January is called the Wolf Moon. Most of my scents harken back to my own experiences, but this one feels ancestral. It is about transformation and ritual. It makes me think of the urgency of the wolf’s howl at the moon. Dark and smoky Choya Loban (smoked frankincense) and Orris (iris root) meet the sweet and precious smells of tuberose, Turkish rose and myrrh. Warm cedarwood, wild sweet orange and the honey notes of linden blossom rise to the top. Sexy.
