Sustainable Santa Cruz

All Inclusive Green Sprout Kit

 HELLO & HAPPY SATURDAY!!

I wanted to share with you this cool/creative/awesome sprout kit that I received from Sustainable Santa Cruz the other day!! I don’t know about you, but over the years I’ve grown to love sprouts!! My mother always ate sprouts when I was I child and of course it took years to embrace them, but once I did, I loved!! Bean sprouts are great for the diet as they are actually a “Live Food” and taste great raw!! The one thing we have to be cautious about when purchasing sprouts is bacteria, pesticides, etc as they are commonly making consumers ill. Since I feel hesitant to buy sprouts in stores I thought it would be a great project to grow sprouts myself!!

WHY SPROUTS?!

Consuming sprouts is like eating live vegetable food. Think for yourself, how nutrient-dense a growing food could be…

Sprouts are a concentrated source of the living enzymes and “life force” that is lost when foods are cooked or not picked fresh from your own garden.

It is said that sprouts ‘represent the miracle of birth’. They are in the true sense, super foods. They are alkaline, whole, pure, and natural foods. It is inexcusable that though aware of their miraculous effects, we do not take full advantage of them. We scour departmental and organic stores, looking for health foods and recipes, but forget to eat ordinary sprouts on daily basis – considering them a poor cousin of high-fashion health foods.

Did you know that sprouts are the cheapest and most convenient source of complete nourishment?!

Sprouts are food for long term health and wellness. If consumed frequently and chosen over other foods, they can prevent diseases and lifestyle related ailments. A sprout possesses enormously enhanced bundles of nutrients. A sprout is the transitional stage between seed and plant. It is, to put it simply, a baby plant. These are essentially pre-digested foods as the seeds’ own enzymes do most of the work. Sprouted seeds acquire natural increased digestibility and nutrients as compared to unsprouted seeds. They provide us with all the essential minerals and vitamins, and must ideally form a part of our daily diets.

Sprouting 1-2-3

  1. Measure out your seeds or beans according to the instructions on the package or in your Sprout Kit, rinse thoroughly in water, then soak overnight.
  2. After soaking, drain the water and rinse the seeds thoroughly, then cover your jar with your sprouting bag to keep the light out. Place the covered jar upside down and tilted at a 45° angle against the wall-or using a dish rack-with a shallow plate underneath to catch excess rinse water.  The goal is to keep seeds damp but not soaking in water until they sprout. The warmer and darker the location, the faster they’ll sprout.
  3. Let the spouts germinate for the number of days indicated on your seed packet or Sprout Kit instruction chart. You may want to vary growth time depending on plans for use. Generally, sprouts with shorter germination times are great for eating whole; you’ll want to germinate them for a little while longer if you plan to juice.

When the jar is full and the sprouts or legumes are ready to use, you can replace the sprouting screen with the solid lid and store in the refrigerator for use

After about the 5th day my sprouts were in full bloom!!

I simply changed the cover screen, put on the cap, and stored in the fridge!!
